Introducing The Game
a substack ... a way of life
News! There is a new publication afoot. A meeting of the minds. Helen Holmes, Miles Goodrich and I have been toiling away in the darkness to create THE GAME, a new Substack. We launch today with three essays.
Broadly speaking, we will write about social culture, media, New York, literature, how our personal experiences reflect what happens in the world at large, etc, but weβre keeping it broad for a reason. Part of why itβs so hard to find outlets to write for these days is that most of the places have a narrow focus and specific asks for their contributors. Itβs tough β you see a new publication created for a specific niche, but then itβs like β¦ great. Now we have one new publication for one specific niche. Weβre widening the lens. We want to build a place where our favorite minds can go long on what fascinates them.
Our first round of essays is public. Weβll be developing a structure for paid posts in the coming months, but we want to give everyone the chance to get to know our work and the vibe of the stack before publishing any paid posts. Of course, if you love us and have cash to spare to support three underemployed writers and our future contributors, feel free to go paid from the get-go!
For my first piece, I wrote about my experience bartending at the US Open this year, working to overcome my aversions to work and sports, being a tennis neophyte from a family of fans, a newfound obsession with Novak Djokovic, and steeping myself in the fascinating history of tennis journalism during my brief periods of rest from the tournament. The link is below.
I hope you will read, and I hope you will enjoy. Let me know what you think, and what youβd like to hear me Go Long on for The Game. Bon appΓ©tit!
